Characteristics and Applications of common PVC additives

Posted byWANSYN

PVC material has a wide range of applications and features excellent processing performance, low manufacturing cost, corrosion resistance, and insulation. It is widely produced and applied all over the world. PVC, as a pure resin, is prone to decomposition during processing, has poor fluidity, low impact strength and poor weather resistance. Therefore, various PVC additives need to be added during the processing to improve its performance. Such as: lubricants, heat stabilizers, impact modifiers, processing AIDS, etc.

The functions of PVC additives are:

1. Promote melting and increase elasticity: Promote the melting of materials, improve surface gloss, and promote the expansion of die (prevent pulling and lengthening)

2. Enhance lubricity: Improve demolding performance, prevent product adhesion, delay melting, and reduce torque

Commonly used PVC additives include: sasol wax, polyethylene wax, microcrystalline wax, oxidized polyethylene wax, etc.

Sasol wax has better electrical properties than paraffin wax, a higher melting point and hardness, a narrower range, and can replace Carnauba wax in terms of luster. It can be used as an internal and external lubricant for various plastics, for the production of Duroc pine wax, and for developing a wider range of applications.

Polyethylene wax features low viscosity, high softening point, good hardness and other properties. It is non-toxic, has good thermal stability, low high-temperature volatility, and excellent pigment dispersion. It not only has excellent external lubricity but also strong internal lubrication effect, which can improve the production efficiency of plastic processing. At room temperature, it has good moisture resistance, strong chemical resistance, and excellent electrical properties, which can improve the appearance of finished products.

It can be widely applied in the manufacturing of color masterbatches, granulation, plastic steel, PVC pipes, hot melt adhesives, rubber, shoe polish, leather brighteners, cable insulation materials, floor wax, plastic profiles, inks, injection molding and other products.

Microcrystalline wax has excellent oil absorption performance and can form stable and uniform pastes with various solvents and waxes. It also has emulsifying properties and can be used as a processing aid for shoe polish, car wax, polishing wax, floor wax, polishing wax, traditional Chinese medicine pills, protective agents, candles, wax toys, dental materials, and cosmetics, etc.

Oxidized polyethylene wax features low viscosity, high softening point, good hardness and other special properties. It is non-toxic, has good thermal stability, low high-temperature volatility, excellent dispersibility for fillers and pigments, and not only has excellent external lubricity but also strong internal lubrication effect. It also has coupling effect, which can improve the production efficiency of plastic processing and reduce production costs. It can be used as a dispersant, lubricant, brightener and coupling agent for pigments or fillers such as concentrated masterbatches, polypropylene masterbatches, additive masterbatches and filler masterbatches.
