Barrier 101: Choosing OTR/WVTR for Snacks & Dairy

Posted byWANSYN

(1) Map Product Sensitivity

· Snacks (oil-rich): sensitive to oxygen → focus on OTR

· Dairy/chilled foods: sensitive to both O₂ and moisture → balance OTR & WVTR

(2) Tier Your Targets

As a starting framework (23 °C, 0% RH OTR; 38 °C/90% RH WVTR proxies; convert to your standard):

· Standard: OTR 50–150 cc/m²·day, WVTR 3–8 g/m²·day

· Enhanced: OTR 5–50, WVTR 1–3

· Ultra: OTR <5, WVTR <1

(3) Material Choices

· mPET (metallized PET): strong OTR drop, moderate WVTR improvement

· AL-laminated: near-zero OTR, excellent WVTR; lowest transparency

· Coated PET: tunable barrier; keep printability

Combine with seal-layer choices to hit both barrier and peelability.

(4) Thermoforming Tips

· Uniform sheet thickness after forming (avoid web thinning at corners)

· Keep dry handling before sealing; control anti-fog if chilled

· Validate barrier post-form—not just on flat film

(5) Documentation & Claims

Maintain barrier test methods and conditions alongside numbers; align with retailers’ specs.
